What public traveller reports say
Summarized in our own words from public sources we read (October 2026). Each point is one or a few travellers' experience, not a statistic.
mixed
Listed with US carriers to double-check and confirm in writing 24 hours before.
negative
After an unrequested seat change on a flight home from Italy, the GF meal was not matched to the traveller's new seat; another traveller was only offered the vegetarian meal or nuts.
negative
A frequent flyer said American forgets their GFML roughly three times out of four, and crew insist it was ordered wrong.
positive
One traveller had two good US to Europe flights after requesting the meal through customer-service chat and reconfirming; meals came out first and included packaged, labelled items.
mixed
Several travellers called the meals plain but safe; one received a farro side once, and one was served a gluten roll and dessert alongside a vegan meal after getting conflicting answers from agents.
How to request a gluten-free meal (GFML)
- Add the special meal GFML (gluten-free meal) when you book, under "special meals" or "dietary requests" on American Airlines's website or app. If you cannot find it, contact the airline.
- Most airlines need the request at least 24-48 hours before departure; check American Airlines's current deadline on its official site.
- About 48 hours before, check that the meal is still on your booking. Seat changes, rebookings and delays can drop it silently.
- Confirm again at check-in and at the gate, and greet the crew when you board: "I'm the gluten-free meal in seat 12A."
- On a codeshare, the operating airline provides the meal. Read labels and skip anything unlabelled (rolls and desserts are common slip-ups).
- Pack enough safe food for the whole journey in case the meal is missing or unsafe.
