What public traveller reports say

Summarized in our own words from public sources we read (October 2026). Each point is one or a few travellers' experience, not a statistic.

mixed
A celiac couple who logged 47 long-haul GF meal requests put Delta with the US carriers to double-check: the GFML often arrives but is sometimes labelled only as a generic 'special meal', so they ask for written confirmation 24 hours before.
negative
One traveller said no GF meal was on board an international Delta flight despite an accommodation request, on a very long travel day.
positive
Another traveller said they had never had a problem getting GF meals on Delta (and Air Canada).
negative
Two travellers described Delta's long-haul meals as poor (hard, overcooked mains and tired fruit); one now eats before boarding and packs bars.
positive
One traveller liked a packaged top-allergen-free snack bar handed out on Delta.

How to request a gluten-free meal (GFML)

  1. Add the special meal GFML (gluten-free meal) when you book, under "special meals" or "dietary requests" on Delta Air Lines's website or app. If you cannot find it, contact the airline.
  2. Most airlines need the request at least 24-48 hours before departure; check Delta Air Lines's current deadline on its official site.
  3. About 48 hours before, check that the meal is still on your booking. Seat changes, rebookings and delays can drop it silently.
  4. Confirm again at check-in and at the gate, and greet the crew when you board: "I'm the gluten-free meal in seat 12A."
  5. On a codeshare, the operating airline provides the meal. Read labels and skip anything unlabelled (rolls and desserts are common slip-ups).
  6. Pack enough safe food for the whole journey in case the meal is missing or unsafe.
