What public traveller reports say

Summarized in our own words from public sources we read (October 2026). Each point is one or a few travellers' experience, not a statistic.

negative
A celiac traveller flying to Spain was served a meal labelled GF and checked by the crew, but its side dish was couscous, and she was very sick. A celiac flight attendant replying stressed that catering quality depends on the departure airport.
mixed
In a follow-up, Iberia told her the meal had been correctly ordered and offered 2,500 Avios; she now skips the in-flight meal.
positive
In business class from Madrid to Los Angeles, a traveller who had pre-ordered GF found GF options clearly marked on the menu and got warm GF bread at both meals; the crew still handed out regular packaged bread, so read every label.
positive
Travellers called Iberia's GF dish from Madrid one of the best meals of their trip (September 2026); another said it felt like a real dish rather than a catch-all special meal.
negative
In the premium cabin from Boston to Madrid (2024), a traveller with GF confirmed on her ticket was served a dinner that was not GF and was later told the crew "just don't do the GF meal".

How to request a gluten-free meal (GFML)

From Iberia's official information (read October 2026):

Official page: Iberia: On-board menu and special meals (official) · Iberia FAQ: In-flight services (official)

General steps for any airline:

  1. Add the special meal GFML (gluten-free meal) when you book, under "special meals" or "dietary requests" on Iberia's website or app. If you cannot find it, contact the airline.
  2. Most airlines need the request at least 24-48 hours before departure; check Iberia's current deadline on its official site.
  3. About 48 hours before, check that the meal is still on your booking. Seat changes, rebookings and delays can drop it silently.
  4. Confirm again at check-in and at the gate, and greet the crew when you board: "I'm the gluten-free meal in seat 12A."
  5. On a codeshare, the operating airline provides the meal. Read labels and skip anything unlabelled (rolls and desserts are common slip-ups).
  6. Pack enough safe food for the whole journey in case the meal is missing or unsafe.
