How to request gluten-free on Holland America Line
From Holland America Line's official information (read October 2026):
- For an intolerance or allergy that is not life-threatening, contact Holland America's Ship Services ((800) 541-1576). For a life-threatening allergy, submit a Special Requirements Information (SRI) form to the Guest Accessibility Department.
- Even with advance notice, contact the Dining Room Manager when you board to review your needs. HAL says its galley has multiple prep areas but cannot guarantee no contact with allergens.

General steps that apply on every line:
- Declare celiac disease (not just a preference) when you book and on any special-needs or dietary form.
- Ask for traditional/fixed dining so you keep the same waiter all week, if the line offers it.
- On day one, meet the maître d' or head waiter and pre-order the next day's meals.
- Be careful at the buffet: shared utensils and self-service make cross-contact more likely. Ask staff to serve you from the kitchen.
- Plan port days and shore excursions with food separately.

What public traveller reports say
Summarized in our own words from public sources we read (October 2026). Each point is one or a few travellers' experience, not a statistic.
positive
One traveller said Holland America's gluten-free options are similar to Princess's and that food is prepared in a separate area (they had toured the kitchen); a travel agent rated HAL as good as Princess for allergies.
