Gluten-free on a cruise: what to ask

Cruise lines handle gluten-free very differently: some want 28 to 90 days' notice, some take next-day pre-orders in the dining room, some label the buffet and others do not. Ask these questions before you book, then again on day one.

Always confirm with the cruise line before booking and again on board. Policies, ships and menus change. Reports below are individual experiences, not guarantees and not medical advice.

Before you book

  1. How and by when do I declare celiac disease (form, email, travel advisor)? Is there a deadline?
  2. Is the request linked to my booking? Can you confirm it in writing?
  3. Which restaurants can prepare gluten-free safely? Are specialty restaurants and room service included?
  4. Is the buffet labelled for gluten? Can staff serve me fresh from the kitchen?
  5. Is there gluten-free bread, pasta, pizza or dessert on board, and a separate fryer?

On day one

  1. Who is my contact for allergies (maître d', head waiter, allergen head waiter)?
  2. How do I pre-order the next day's meals, and by what time?
  3. Can I keep the same table and waiter all week?
  4. How do port days, excursions with meals and late-night snacks work for me?
